To get SSI benefits, you have to show Social Security how you meet requirements for both your health needs and your household income.
Here are the health standards for SSI eligibility:
- You have physical impairments, mental health disorders, or a combination of ailments, and they are severe.
- Because of your health struggles, you can’t work at all, or very little.
- There’s no sign that your health problems and ability to work will improve for at least a year.
These are the income standards for SSI eligibility:
- Your monthly earnings from any kind of work fall under an amount set by Social Security.
- All the other assets or resources you own add up to little value.
The income limit changes over time. In 2023, you couldn’t qualify for SSI benefits if you earned more than $1,913 per month as an individual, or $2,827 as a couple.
You also couldn’t have more than $2,000 worth of other economic resources as an individual or $3,000 as a couple.
Some assets, however, such as your home, don’t count against that limit.
